Plain Sky

Plain Sky shows the same storm information that storm spotters see, but says it in words an ordinary person can act on. No dBZ, no velocity colors, no legend. Each screen answers a question a person actually has: what will happen at my house in the next hour and when, where is the storm and what is in it, and which of the places I care about is in trouble tonight. Official National Weather Service warnings keep their exact names and always win over the app's own estimates.

Who it is for

Built for

Anyone at home deciding whether to act now or wait, and families juggling home, school, work and a game field on a stormy evening.

What is in it

What we are building

  • Storm Lanes: a one hour timeline for one place. One row per hazard (rain, hail, wind gusts, tornado risk, official warnings), a plain caption under each, and a single plan line like "leave by 4:42, or wait until 5:10."
  • Labeled Radar: the map with every colored area labeled in words, "Heavy rain, hard to see while driving," "Hail here, up to golf ball size." Four time buttons instead of a scrubber. Projected frames drawn lighter and marked as such.
  • My Places: home, a child's school, work, the game field, all on one screen for the evening ahead, worst first.
  • Built on NOAA MRMS radar products and the NWS alerts API. The heavy work happens once per radar frame on the server, so cost stays flat as users grow.
  • Says when it is guessing: future times are rounded, projection stops at 60 minutes, rotation is never called a tornado unless NWS says so.
  • Not an official warning service, and says so on every screen, pointing to NWS, NOAA Weather Radio and Wireless Emergency Alerts.

Where it stands

  1. ConceptThree screens, data sources, Cloudflare architecture
  2. Design compsStorm Lanes, Labeled Radar, My Places
  3. Phase 0Live rain and warnings lanes for now

Next upPhase 0: a cron Worker polling NWS alerts, a container decoding one MRMS product, and a point endpoint returning the rain and warnings lanes for right now.

Build log

What has happened

Newest first. One line per step, added as the work goes.

  1. Concept and build document complete: three screens, data behind each lane, verdict rules, API shape, Cloudflare architecture and a five phase build order. Screens are design comps, not a working build.
  2. Listed on the Nspire App Co index.
